Tile (part of a four-tile composition)

Den Salm workshop

Antwerp, c. 1540

2.5cm (thickness); 11.7cm (height); 11.7cm (width)

tin-glazed earthenware

From about 1500, Italian emigrants to Antwerp made maiolica in the Italian Renaissance style which was exported to other countries, including England. Fragments of tiles like this one have been found in London and at Bletchingley, Surrey, a house which belonged from 1540 to Anne of Cleves.
